Attention all Singers!!We have started a labour choir in Ottawa. Our goal is to bring together interested singers and instrumentalists (acoustic guitar, bass, drums, percussion, accordian...). We started in April 2006. took a break over the summer and have started up again. We have a dedicated, small core of singers and new folks are joining. We welcome new members at any time.
You do not need any formal music training. You do not need to read music. You do not need experience singing harmony. You can learn what you will need to know just by participating in the choir.
The goal of this new labour choir is simple: To make great music and to have a lot of fun in solidarity.
Michael MacDonald helps with song selection and choral arrangements. Mike is the former choir director of Big Soul Project and the Ottawa Folklore Centre choir, among others. Maura Volante is now our choir director, helping us to learn the songs and harmony parts during our practice. Maura has years of experience teaching music with her improvisational choir - Oya and in teaching Singing for Yourselves a class for adult beginner singers. Our song selection includes well-known classics with a fresh sound, as well as contemporary songs and original tunes.
Music has played an important role in the history of the labour movement - in spreading the word about conditions workers have faced as well as about struggles for justice and dignity. Because music involves words and music - a message and emotion - it can be a powerful voice giving expression to our needs, feelings, hopes and desires.
We hope that this community-based choir will help to entertain and educate through our music. If you're interested in singing, if you're curious about joining a choir, playing with a choir, or just plain interested in something different come on out. There's no auditions or try outs. Just a lot of people making great music.
The Capital City Workers' Choir meets each Wednesday, from 7:00-9:00pm at Centretown Daycare, 94 James St., Third floor lounge.
Acoustic instruments and voices welcome! Players should bring their instruments
